English is the main language used for travel, services, and daily communication. Maori place names are common on signs and maps.

Mobile Network: Coverage is generally good in cities and towns, but remote highways, mountain areas, national parks, and parts of the South Island can have weak or no signal. 4G is widespread, and 5G is available in some larger urban areas.

Roaming/SIM/eSIM: For short visits, roaming is convenient but can be expensive and may have data limits. A local SIM usually gives better value for multi-day or high-data trips, especially if you need maps and navigation every day. An eSIM can be the easiest option if your phone supports it, since you can activate data before arrival without finding a shop. If you will drive through remote areas, do not rely on mobile coverage alone and download offline maps in advance.

Cards are widely accepted in cities, towns, hotels, supermarkets, fuel stations, and most restaurants. Contactless payment is common. Carry some cash for small rural businesses, markets, or backup in remote areas, but many visitors use cards for most spending.

Tipping is not expected in New Zealand, and service staff are generally paid without relying on tips. Rounding up or leaving a small amount for excellent service is appreciated but optional. There is usually no need to tip in cafes, taxis, or standard restaurants unless you want to reward especially good service.

Adapter: Visitors from countries using different plug types will need a Type I adapter. Travelers from countries using 110 to 120 V systems should also check whether their devices support 230 to 240 V.
