English is commonly spoken in Tallinn and other main tourist areas, especially by younger people and in hotels, cafes, and transport services. Russian is also commonly understood in some areas. Learning a few basic Estonian phrases is appreciated.

Mobile Network: Mobile coverage is generally very good in cities, towns, and along main roads. 4G is widespread and 5G is available in parts of the country, especially around larger urban areas. Coverage can be weaker on some islands, in remote forests, or near sparsely populated coastal areas.

Roaming/SIM/eSIM: For short trips, EU visitors can typically use roaming on domestic plan terms, subject to fair use rules, and this is often the simplest option. For non EU visitors, a local SIM can be cost effective if staying more than a few days or needing a local number. An eSIM is usually the easiest setup for compatible phones and can be bought before arrival, but check network support and data limits. Local SIMs may offer better value for larger data use, while roaming is most convenient but can be expensive for non EU plans.

Card payment is widely accepted in cities, towns, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, and public transport ticketing. Contactless payment is common. Carry some cash for rural areas, small market stalls, or occasional small businesses that may prefer cards only above a minimum amount or may not accept foreign cards reliably.

Tipping is not obligatory in Estonia. Service is usually included in menu prices. In restaurants, rounding up or leaving about 5 to 10 percent is appreciated for good service but not expected. Small tips for taxis are typically by rounding up the fare. Hotel housekeeping tips are optional.
