Cards are widely accepted in hotels, department stores, chain restaurants, and many urban businesses, but cash is still important for night markets, small eateries, traditional shops, and some taxis. EasyCard or iPASS is useful for local transport and small purchases in many places.

Taiwan is generally considered safe for travelers, including solo visitors, with low levels of violent crime. The main practical risks are traffic, scooters, heavy rain, typhoons, earthquakes, strong sun, and hiking accidents in remote terrain.

• Watch carefully for scooters and turning vehicles when crossing streets, even at marked crossings.
• Keep some cash and a charged phone with you, especially if visiting night markets, rural areas, or smaller towns.
• During typhoon warnings or heavy rain, check transport status and avoid coastal walks, riversides, and mountain roads.
• If hiking, register where required, start early, carry water and weather gear, and do not rely only on mobile signal in remote areas.
• Earthquakes can occur. Follow local instructions, move away from falling objects, and check official alerts after shaking stops.

• Greet people politely; a handshake may occur in business settings, but casual interactions are often simple and understated.
• Remove shoes when entering some homes and certain traditional accommodations if asked.
• Use both hands when presenting a business card in formal contexts.
• Avoid overly confrontational behavior in public; calm communication is generally preferred.
• On escalators, follow local station guidance and avoid blocking passenger flow.
