English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, younger urban residents, and many restaurants in Sofia, Plovdiv, and major resorts. In smaller towns and rural areas, English may be limited, so having your hotel address and key phrases ready is useful.

Mobile Network: Mobile coverage is generally good in cities, towns, and along main roads. 4G is widely available and 5G is present in larger urban areas, but coverage can weaken in remote mountain regions and some rural valleys.

Roaming/SIM/eSIM: For short stays, EU visitors can commonly use roaming under their home plan, though fair use rules may apply. For non EU visitors, a local SIM often gives better value for data and domestic calls than roaming. An eSIM is convenient if your phone supports it and can be set up before arrival, but local prepaid SIMs may still offer lower prices or more straightforward top-ups for longer stays.

Cards are widely accepted in Sofia, major cities, shopping centers, chain hotels, and many restaurants. Cash is still useful for small towns, local markets, mountain huts, beach kiosks, and some taxis or family-run guesthouses.

Tipping is common but moderate. In restaurants, around 5 to 10 percent is typical if service is not already included and you were satisfied. Rounding up is common in cafes, taxis, and for hotel staff. Check the bill first, as some places may include a service charge.

Adapter: Visitors from countries using Type C or Type F plugs usually do not need an adapter. Travelers from the UK, Ireland, the US, Canada, and other regions with different plug types will typically need an adapter. Check whether your devices support 230 V.
