English is spoken throughout the country and is the main language used in daily life. Irish is also official and appears on many signs, especially in Gaeltacht areas, but travelers can typically function entirely in English.

Mobile Network: Mobile coverage is generally good in cities, towns, and along major roads. Coverage can become weaker in remote coastal, mountain, and island areas, so expect occasional dead zones when traveling in rural parts of the west and northwest.

Roaming/SIM/eSIM: For short stays, EU travelers can commonly use roaming under their home plan, but check fair use limits. For non EU travelers, roaming is often the most expensive option. A local SIM can be cost effective for longer stays if your phone is unlocked, while an eSIM is usually the easiest option for quick setup and airport arrival if your device supports it. If you will be driving in rural areas, download offline maps because local SIM, eSIM, and roaming all may face weaker coverage outside towns.

Cards are widely accepted in cities, towns, hotels, restaurants, pubs, and public transport ticket machines. Contactless payment is common. It is still useful to carry a small amount of cash for rural areas, small shops, market stalls, or taxis that may prefer card but can occasionally have signal issues.

Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory in most situations. In restaurants with table service, around 10 percent is common for good service if a service charge is not already included. In cafes, pubs, and counter service places, tipping is usually modest or not expected. Taxi passengers commonly round up the fare or add a small tip. Hotel housekeeping tips are optional.
