A physical SIM is a chip glued into a card. An eSIM is the same chip, soldered into the phone at the factory, that can be rewritten. Everything a network needs to recognise you is software, so it can be delivered in seconds.

Where They Behave Identically
Once a plan is running, your phone cannot tell the difference and neither can the network. Speed, coverage and signal strength come from the local mobile network you are connected to, not from the format of the SIM.
The one real drawback is device support. A plastic SIM works in any phone with a slot; an eSIM needs a phone that has the chip and is not locked to a single operator. Check yours on the Compatible Devices page before you buy.
