Travel Tips & Essential Information for Armenia
Armenia is a compact South Caucasus destination known for ancient monasteries, mountain scenery, strong coffee culture, and warm hospitality. Most trips are centered on Yerevan, with easy side trips to Garni, Geghard, Lake Sevan, Dilijan, and wine areas such as Areni.
Official Languages: Armenian
English is commonly spoken in many hotels, restaurants, tour companies, and central Yerevan businesses, especially among younger people. Russian is also widely used. Outside main tourist areas, English can be limited.
Mobile Network: Mobile coverage is generally good in Yerevan and along main roads and towns. Rural and mountain coverage can become weaker or intermittent.
Roaming/SIM/eSIM: Roaming is convenient for short stays but can be expensive depending on your home plan. A local SIM is usually the best value for travelers staying several days or more and needing generous data. eSIM can be a good middle option if your phone supports it, especially for quick setup on arrival, but local SIM plans may still offer better value or easier top-ups. Compare airport offers with city shops before buying.
Cards are widely accepted in Yerevan hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, and many cafes, but cash is still important for taxis, small shops, markets, rural areas, and some guesthouses. Carry some dram for day trips and smaller towns.
Tipping is appreciated but not always automatic. In restaurants, check whether a service charge has already been added. If not, around 5 to 10 percent is commonly appreciated for good service. For taxis, many travelers round up the fare. Small tips are also appreciated by guides and drivers on tours.
Plug Type: Type C and Type F
Voltage: 230 V, 50 Hz
Adapter: If your devices use Type C or Type F plugs and support 230 V, you typically do not need an adapter. Travelers from the UK, Ireland, North America, and other countries with different plugs will usually need an adapter. Some devices from 110 V markets may also need a voltage-compatible charger.
Armenia is commonly considered a relatively safe destination for visitors, with low levels of petty crime in main tourist areas. Usual city precautions still apply. Extra caution is important near border areas, and travelers should follow current government travel advisories before visiting border regions.
- Use registered taxis or ride-hailing apps instead of accepting unsolicited rides.
- Keep valuables secure on public transport and in crowded markets.
- Check current border and regional security advice before planning travel near frontier zones.
- Road conditions and driving standards can vary, so allow extra time for mountain routes and avoid night driving in remote areas when possible.
- In winter, mountain roads can be icy or temporarily affected by snow.
Do
- Carry small cash for taxis, markets, and rural stops.
- Use official exchange offices, banks, or bank ATMs for cash withdrawal or currency exchange.
- Dress modestly at religious sites, with shoulders and knees covered when possible.
- Confirm taxi fare in advance if not using a metered taxi or app.
- Try local food and wine, but ask about ingredients if you have dietary restrictions, as menus may not always be detailed in English.
Avoid
- Do not photograph military sites, border infrastructure, or uniformed personnel.
- Do not rely only on cards outside Yerevan.
- Do not assume mountain travel times are short even if distances look small on a map.
- Do not discuss regional conflict issues casually with strangers.
- Do not enter restricted border areas without checking current rules and safety advice.
Local Cultural Tips
- Hospitality is important, and hosts may offer food, coffee, or sweets more than once. A polite acceptance or warm thanks is appreciated.
- When visiting monasteries and churches, dress modestly and speak quietly.
- Armenians often value respectful conversation about history, family, and culture. Sensitive political or regional topics are better approached carefully.
- It is common to greet people before asking a question in shops or small businesses.
- A handshake is a common greeting in formal or first meetings.
- Politeness matters, and a friendly tone goes a long way.
- Shoes may be removed when entering a private home if the host indicates this.
- At churches and memorial sites, behave respectfully and keep voices low.
- If invited to a meal, bringing sweets, fruit, or a small gift is a thoughtful gesture.
