How Many eSIMs Can My Phone Hold?

Most modern phones store several profiles at once — often eight or more — but only one or two can be switched on at the same time

Two different limits are at work, and mixing them up is what makes this confusing. Stored is how many profiles the chip can keep. Active is how many can be connected to a network simultaneously.

    Stored

Recent iPhones hold eight or more profiles; most Android phones hold several. Old ones you no longer need can be deleted at any time to make room

    Active

Usually two lines at once — commonly your home SIM plus one eSIM, or two eSIMs on a phone with no SIM tray. Only one of them carries mobile data

    What This Means in Practice

    • You can install eSIMs for several trips ahead of time and switch each on when you arrive
    • Your home line and a travel eSIM live side by side, so your own number keeps receiving calls
    • Switching between two travel plans is a toggle, not a reinstall

If the phone refuses to add a plan and says there is no space, delete a profile you have finished with. Be sure first — a deleted eSIM cannot always be reinstalled, and any data left on it goes with it. See What Happens if I Delete My eSIM?

A stored profile that is switched off uses no data and costs nothing. There is no reason to delete one just to tidy up, unless you have hit the storage limit
