Seeing an unfamiliar operator name is normal — your plan allows several networks in most countries, and the phone picks whichever it thinks is strongest
It is only worth acting on when the connection is poor. The name at the top of the screen is not a fault report.
When to Intervene
- The signal is weak while other people nearby have full bars
- The connection keeps dropping in a place where it should be fine
- The phone is switching back and forth between two networks
Choosing a Network by Hand
- Open your mobile network settings and find Network Selection or Choose Network
- Turn off Automatic
- Wait while the phone lists the networks it can see
- Pick one and wait a minute for it to register
- If it fails or performs no better, try the next one
Turn automatic selection back on before you move. A manually pinned network is one the phone will keep trying to reach even after you have travelled out of its coverage, which leaves you with no connection at all.
Not every network in the list is available to your plan. Choosing one that is not simply fails to register — no harm done, and nothing is charged.
In a place you will be for a while, it is worth trying each permitted network once. Coverage between operators differs street by street, and the difference in a hotel room can be substantial
