Will My eSIM Work in China?

Yes for connectivity, and usually yes for the apps that are blocked locally — but "usually" is doing real work in that sentence, so prepare a fallback before you fly

Mainland China filters the internet at the border of its own networks. Search, mapping, messaging and social apps that are ordinary elsewhere are unreachable for anyone connected the local way, whatever SIM they use.

Why a Travel eSIM Often Behaves Differently

A visitor's plan is a roaming arrangement. On many plans your traffic is carried back out to the network that issued the profile before it reaches the wider internet, and the local filtering is applied to traffic that stays inside the country. Where that is how a plan is built, the usual apps work as they do at home.

This is a property of the individual plan, not a guarantee we can make. Routing differs between plans, can change without notice, and is not something any reseller controls. Treat unfiltered access as likely rather than certain, and do not build the trip on it.

What to Do Before You Fly

    1. Install and test a reputable VPN at home — most VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach once you are there
    2. Download offline maps for the cities you will visit
    3. Set up a local payment app if you can, and carry a card that works as a backup
    4. Tell people at home which messaging app you will use, in case your usual one is unreliable

Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan are not subject to mainland filtering and behave like any other destination. They are also separate entries on most coverage lists, so check yours covers the ones you are visiting.

A travel eSIM has one practical advantage here regardless of routing: no passport registration, no local shop, and it is installed and working before you reach the border queue
