Receiving a text message is free in most countries and does not use data. Keeping the home line switched on is therefore usually the right choice, even if you never make a call on it.
Staying Reachable Without the Charges
- Keep the home line on, with data roaming off — messages arrive, data does not
- Tell friends and family to reach you on a messaging app instead of by call
- Turn on Wi-Fi calling before you leave if your operator offers it, so calls to your number arrive over the internet
Answering a call abroad is billed by your operator, sometimes at a high rate, and in some countries you are charged for receiving as well as making. Letting it go to voicemail and replying over an app is the cheap habit.
A small number of plans do include a local number for calls and texts. Where that is offered it is stated on the plan; if the plan does not say so, it is data-only
