Auto Renew tops your eSIM up on its own before you run out — it is off unless you switch it on, and you switch it off again from the same screen
The setting is called Auto Renew on the screen, and auto-renew in writing — the same thing either way. It exists for the trip where running out is worse than the cost of another top-up: a working stay, a long journey, anywhere you would rather not be finding Wi-Fi to buy data. Nothing renews unless you set it up first.
When It Fires
- When you have used about 90% of the data on the plan, or
- When the plan is within 24 hours of expiring
What It Charges
- Your tDC balance first, as far as it goes
- Then the saved card you chose when you set it up
- The top-up is the package you picked in advance — not a guess, and not the most expensive one available
You get an eMail every time it renews, so a charge never arrives without notice. The top-up lands on the same eSIM; nothing has to be installed and no setting changes.
Turning It Off
- Open My eSIMs
- Choose the eSIM
- Switch Auto Renew off — it stops immediately, and nothing further is charged
An expired card breaks it. Auto Renew needs a valid saved card even when your wallet covers the cost, and a card that expires mid-trip makes every attempt fail. After five consecutive failures it pauses itself and eMails you rather than retrying forever. Check the card before you travel — see How do I Manage My Saved Cards?
If you would rather keep full control, leave Auto Renew off and watch the remaining data instead. Topping up by hand takes about a minute over any Wi-Fi
