Turning It On
- iPhone: Settings › Personal Hotspot › Allow Others to Join
- Android: Settings › Network & internet › Hotspot & tethering
If the phone has two lines, the hotspot uses whichever one is set for mobile data. Check that is the travel eSIM before you share — otherwise you are sharing your home SIM at roaming rates.
What It Costs You
Every megabyte a connected device uses comes off your plan, and a laptop is far less careful than a phone. Cloud sync, software updates and video calls all behave as though the connection were unlimited.

Before tethering a laptop, pause cloud backup and set updates to manual. One unattended sync can consume a week's plan while you are making coffee.
If tethering is part of the plan for the trip — a working laptop, or sharing with family — take an Unlimited Plan. Counting gigabytes while several devices share one connection is not a restful way to travel.
A small number of plans restrict tethering. Where that applies it is stated on the plan, so it is worth a glance if hotspot is the main reason you are buying
